The HR Committee was concerned about reports of women resorting to clandestine and unsafe abortions, which put their lives and health at risk, and about the obstacles faced in practice by women in accessing safe legal abortions. The Working Group on discrimination against women and girls observed that in some hospitals access to abortion services was compromised due to the exercise of conscientious objection. [Para 49]
