Recommendation
[Two] Committees recommended that South Africa amend the Act to prohibit virginity testing for all women and girls, and that it raise awareness about the criminal nature of harmful practices. CEDAW recommended criminalizing ukuthwala, ensuring that all cases of ukuthwala and female genital mutilation were investigated and that perpetrators were prosecuted and punished, ensuring access to protection, and adopting a strategy to eliminate harmful practices.
