The Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples stated that the current human rights situation of Indigenous Peoples in Canada could not be fully understood without considering the legacy of residential schools and the intergenerational trauma that they had created...Children had been subjected to physical and sexual abuse and many survivors lived with post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, depression and other mental health issues.
