- Maternal health / morbidity / mortality
Type:Review DocumentationSession:14th session, November 2012Status:N/AContents:Reducing maternal mortality still constitutes one of the major challenges facing the Peruvian Government. It is hoped that thanks to an increase in childbirths in institutions, better prenatal care and the follow-up provided by social programmes to pregnant mothers, this challenge may be successfully met. For this a further effort will be made to implement the National Strategic Plan for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality 2009-2015, through funded activities aiming primarily at providing guidance and advice in sexual and reproductive health. - Abortion
- Forced sterilization
- Sexual and / or reproductive rights and / or health broadly
Type:Review DocumentationSession:2nd session, May 2008Status:Not Followed up with a RecommendationContents:CAT in 2006, the HR Committee in 2000 and CERD in 1999 expressed concern at reports of women, particularly indigenous women in rural areas, undergoing involuntary sterilization. CRC and CERD noted with concern that access to health and health services is inadequate, especially in rural and remote areas of the country. The rates of maternal, infant and under-five mortality, despite some improvements, continue to be among the highest in Latin America. CEDAW urged Peru to review the restrictive interpretation of therapeutic abortion which is legal; to consider removing punitive provisions relating to abortion for unwanted pregnancies; and to provide women with access to quality services. In 2005, the HR Committee adopted views on a case in which the victim was denied a therapeutic abortion. In 2006, in relation to this particular case, the Government informed the Committee of a proposed amendment to the Criminal Code or the enactment of a special law regulating therapeutic abortion, and indicated that they had offered compensation to the victim. The victim refused compensation, noting that the legislative framework already exists but that it should be interpreted in accordance with international standards. In 2007, CEDAW called upon Peru to comply with the Committee's recommendations concerning this case. [Para 32; CAT, CRC, CERD, CEDAW] -

- Abortion
- Sexual and / or reproductive rights and / or health broadly
Type:CommentSession:28th Session November 2017Status:N/AContents:The Centre for Reproductive Rights Inc. noted that in Peru a pregnancy could only be legally interrupted in order to save the life of the woman or to avoid serious and permanent damage to her health, also known as “therapeutic abortion” and therefore, it regretted that Peru only took note of the recommendation made under its review to decriminalize abortion in all instances. The Centre for Reproductive Rights Inc. stated that a pending lawsuit before the Constitutional Court could potentially ban therapeutic abortion, preventing all women and girls seeking abortions under the current law to do so and it worried that these developments were happening in a wider context of backlash against women’s sexual and reproductive rights in Peru.ExplanationPeru reiterated its commitment to continue working in order to advance in this subject. Peru stated that the country had accepted about six recommendations regarding sexual and reproductive rights. -
